A complete biomicroscopic examination is required prior to contact lens fitting. One must rule out any ocular disease that might contra-indicate contact lens fitting, detect any conditions indicating a certain type of lens, and record any abnormalities present prior to fitting so one knows if contact lens wear has caused changes.
The biomicroscopic examination should include an examination of:
the lids and lid margins
bulbar conjunctiva
tear film
inferior palpebral conjunctiva
eversion of the upper lid to examine
superior palpebral conjunctiva
limbal area
cornea
anterior chamber angle
iris and crystalline lens
See the module on the biomicroscope
for a detailed prefitting biomicroscopy examination.
